Wearing stripes can be tricky…if you decide to even wear them at all. Often times I’m torn between prints- what is in? Gingham, checks, or florals? Well, I’ve found that between the ever-changing trends, stripes are always in. I’ve had many of my striped pieces forever in my closet, and to this day I have found ways to funk them up. I like the challenge of wearing them according to the present day style. Here are a few rules that I set for myself when styling a striped outfit:
1. Stick To One Color Scheme
It is really easy to over-do it when wearing stripes. Make it easy on yourself and stick to one color scheme. When wearing black and white stripes, pair with one of those colors or some variation of them, such as gray or tan, for a more monochrome look. When wearing colorful stripes, I would pick one of the prominent colors to complete your look. You will walk out the door feeling confident and will appear so put together that you’re guaranteed to get compliments. In my look above, I made an exception and wore my rainbow heels to match the rainbow dress. But, if you’re just starting out, stick with one color for the matching pieces. Which brings me to number two…
2. Pair With Solid Colors
I grew up with the idea that if I’m wearing a print, I can only accompany with solid pieces. As I’ve gotten more comfortable with my style, I have deviated from that a little, but usually that is a great rule to follow. Keep it simple and the striped piece will be more of a statement.
3. Vertical vs. Horizontal Stripes
When buying new striped pieces, you will be safe with vertical stripes. There are exceptions of course, however vertical stripes tend to be more slimming and they make the body look taller. This is an easy rule to follow, especially if you’re in a rush when shopping. When in doubt, go vertical!
4. There Is No Stripe Limit
Whether there is one stripe or a hundred, you can’t go wrong! Lately I have been loving a fun white stripe down the side of jeans that adds a little extra wow factor. While that single stripe is great, pin stripes are also super cute (and super in) and they tend to look more expensive.
5. Have Fun With It
Whatever you choose to wear, be sure to enjoy what you’re wearing! If you’re uncomfortable, it will bring you down. When you’re feeling your outfit, it will show and you will look better, trust me. Of course it’s fun to push the fashion boundaries, but remember, there is no pressure. You do you, that’s all that really matters!
